Brehm Roofing & Restoration recently completed a 100+ square roof replacement in the Forest Ridge neighborhood of Gainesville, FL for a homeowner with a 15-year-old roof that had reached the end of its service life. One of the challenges with this project was the removal of the old shingles, which were installed over a peel and stick underlayment directly applied to the roof deck. Despite the labor-intensive tear-off, our team made efficient progress and completed the project in just two days. During prep, we discovered that the previous roofer had properly nailed off the deck with 8D nails in accordance with Florida Building Code, eliminating the need for renailing. Another key detail: the home features spray foam insulation in the attic, meaning the roof system is non-ventilated. Because of this, we explained to the homeowner that extended shingle warranties are not offered by manufacturers without proper ventilation—an often-overlooked issue by some contractors. The homeowner appreciated our transparency and was fully aware of the limitations. We installed two layers of synthetic underlayment on top of the existing peel and stick, followed by Owens Corning Duration shingles in Driftwood. Duration shingles feature SureNail® Technology, delivering enhanced fastening strength and a 130 MPH wind rating. They also provide algae resistance, color consistency, and a bold dimensional profile.
