Compass Exteriors recently completed a full roof replacement on a home in Auburn, New Hampshire, just down the road from Auburn Pitts Bar and Grill. What started as an aging-roof replacement also gave us an opportunity to correct underlying insulation and ventilation issues that had been affecting the home. The homeowners selected Owens Corning Onyx Black shingles, paired with black drip edge for a clean, coordinated finish. Onyx Black is one of the most popular shingle colors we install throughout Southern New Hampshire and gave this home a sharp update without changing its overall character. Once the existing roof was removed, our crew was able to get a much better look at what was happening beneath the shingles. Sections of the roof required new decking, and opening those areas exposed deficiencies in the insulation and roof assembly that were contributing to ventilation concerns. Rather than simply redecking the roof and covering everything back up, we used the opportunity to re-insulate the affected sections and improve the roof's ventilation conditions at the same time. That effectively allowed the homeowners to solve two problems with one project. Improving the insulation created a better thermal barrier, helping reduce unwanted heat transfer and improve energy efficiency, while correcting the ventilation issues gives heat and moisture a better path out of the roof assembly. This is particularly important in New Hampshire, where poor attic insulation and ventilation can contribute to excessive heat loss, condensation, uneven snow melt and conditions that encourage ice buildup during the winter. Why does roof decking matter during a replacement? The shingles are only the visible portion of a roofing system. Once an old roof is stripped, the condition of the decking underneath needs to be evaluated before new materials are installed. Soft, deteriorated or unsuitable decking should be replaced rather than concealed beneath a new roof.
