Hallway Project

July 2024

This idea behind this wall finish project was to build a somewhat NorthWest themed wood wall with hidden doors for both the laundry room and the utility closet. The original design was for a vertically slatted wall which would conceal the 2 door openings. We have subsequently decided that a framed panel treatment might be less industrial in appearance, easier to build and less expensive both in terms of material and labor. We also determined that due to the narrow door opening to the Laundry, a rolling door would improve access AND be less complicated and costly to install for this opening. The Utility closet would still require a “hidden door” finish as much for soundproofing as for appearance. Proposed work and dimensions: 1. The overall hallway wall is 16’ 10” long 2. The framed panel theme would cover the entire wall and both door panels. 3. The Frame Elements would be rounded on both edges (approx a 3⁄4” to 1” radius bit. 4. The existing 30” Laundry room doorway opening would finish out to approximately 29” wide with casing. 5. This doorway would be covered by an approximately 36” wide rolling-door hung from a barn door rail or possibly a hidden channel support with rolling car carriers attached to the back of the panel door per the attached example. The choice of treatments would depend on what we collectively, thought was optimal. 6. The 36” wide Utility room door would remain as a left-hand, outward swinging door with hidden hinges (SOSS Model 218’s), resulting in a hidden door appearance from the front door and hallway. 7. The Laundry room door could also be a rolling “barn door” hung from a rail mounted above the door opening with strap hangers bolted through the door panel. 8. Either rolling door would require the door panel to be approximately 2” out from the surrounding surfaces to accommodate the rolling hangers and the raised panel frames on the left-side wall. 9. Both doors could hopefully be constructed using the on-hand the 36” x 96” door and the plywood panel material on site: (36” x 96”, 13” x 96”, 16” x 96” and 33” x 120”) 10. The wall finish would be a Slate stain from Chem Craft in Oregon City, closely matching the kitchen cabinet stain. I will buy the Stain and have it on hand. 11. The furthest edge of the flat wall (left of the laundry door), would need a hardwood capped edge. 12. Work could proceed on any and all days of the week as convenient to you. 13. The proposed project does not include any electric or tile work, just carpentry and finish.
