Recently completed this full roof replacement in Kinston, North Carolina using Owens Corning Duration® Series architectural shingles in the classic color Onyx Black. The previous roof had provided nearly 30 years of service and was well beyond its expected lifespan. During removal, we discovered deteriorated roof sheathing around the satellite dish mounting area, which is a common issue when dishes are installed directly on the roof. For this reason, we highly recommend avoiding roof-mounted satellite dishes whenever possible. We also found that the existing standard rubber pipe flashings had prematurely deteriorated, leading to damage and creating a future leak risk. To ensure long-term protection, we installed Lifetime Ultimate Pipe Flashings, designed to remain watertight for the life of the roof without needing future repairs or replacement. Additionally, the old thin galvanized flashing showed significant corrosion, and in several areas the step flashing had been improperly installed as a single continuous strip rather than the correct step-flashing method. We corrected these issues by replacing all step flashing and endwall flashing with 26-gauge black galvalume flashing, providing superior durability and a clean finish that complements the Onyx Black shingles. This homeowner can now enjoy peace of mind knowing their new roofing system is built to deliver decades of dependable, trouble-free protection.
