Historic Roof Restoration at 4,360 Feet Above Sea Level Some roofing projects require more than craftsmanship—they require engineering, problem-solving, and teamwork. Eastman Roofing was given the opportunity to restore the roof on the historic Copernicus Peak Lookout Tower atop Mount Hamilton, the highest peak in Santa Clara County. Originally built in 1931, this Cal Fire lookout tower is exposed to some of California's harshest weather, including wind gusts exceeding 120 mph. What began as a leaking metal roof quickly became a unique engineering challenge. After removing the existing roof, we discovered there was no structural roof decking beneath the metal panels—requiring us to redesign the project in collaboration with Cal Fire engineer Albert Lau before moving forward. Working in extreme conditions meant early mornings, strict safety protocols, and carefully transporting materials up the mountain before afternoon winds made roofing unsafe. Our team installed a new structural roof deck, premium waterproofing system, custom edge flashing, and reinstalled the original metal roof to preserve the tower's historic appearance while providing long-term protection against the elements. The result is a watertight roofing system that maintains the integrity of this historic landmark and helps ensure it will continue serving Cal Fire for years to come.
