100 Year Old Trim Restoration
Sometimes the old homes in most need of work are the most satisfying. Over the course of 100 years, this trim had taken a beating and was improperly painted at least a couple too many times. Paint was chipping off everywhere. We put down floor protection over the hardwood floors and got to scraping and sanding down all the trim to a point where all remaining paint was tight to the surface. We sure did take a lot of paint off though. Our power sanders were hooked up to a Festool dust extractor to suck up all of the dust. Once sanded down, we filled hundreds upon hundreds of imperfections in the trim to create a smooth surface again. The red filler you see is Bondo glazing putty. It dries hard and will withstand the wear and tear trim takes better than a standard spackle would. We sprayed all of the trim with multiple coats of primer (doing more filling and sanding in between) and then 2 top coats of trim enamel. Oh, and of course we painted the walls after that and had lots more patching to do there!
