Purdue University Small Animal Hospital
The Purdue University Small Animal Hospital project was all about creating a more functional, sanitary, and reliable outdoor space for animal care. Originally, the hospital’s outdoor dog run—used daily for patient recovery and enrichment—was natural grass. With constant use and Indiana’s unpredictable weather, the area quickly became worn, muddy, and difficult to maintain, ultimately impacting both usability and cleanliness. Working alongside Purdue’s veterinary team and building on a student-led landscape design initiative, we installed K9Grass Elite to replace the failing natural surface. This system was specifically chosen for its ability to handle heavy use in a medical environment while maintaining a clean, consistent surface. K9Grass features a fully permeable, knitted construction that allows liquids to drain instantly, along with built-in antimicrobial technology to help maintain a more sanitary environment for patients. The result is a durable, mud-free space that remains functional in all weather conditions—supporting better patient care, easier maintenance for staff, and a more reliable environment for recovery and daily use. This project is a great example of how thoughtful design and the right materials can make a meaningful impact in specialized environments like veterinary care.
