This project was an absolute pleasure to bring to life — a complete backyard transformation for two wonderful clients who were engaged, thoughtful, and incredibly accommodating throughout the process. Their collaboration and insightful feedback allowed us to fine-tune every detail and deliver a space that feels intentional, welcoming, and built to last. Our goal was to create a functional, low-maintenance, and visually balanced outdoor living space that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The result is a cohesive design that blends craftsmanship with ecological awareness — reflecting both the property’s natural beauty and the clients’ West Coast sensibility. Scope of Work Custom 10’ x 16’ Shed This fully custom shed was designed and pre-fabricated in our shop using Smart Framing, an eco-friendly construction technique that reduces material waste while maintaining superior structural integrity. The system optimizes stud spacing and lumber use — a sustainable choice that minimizes the project’s environmental footprint without compromising strength or durability. The shed features a pressure-treated foundation, vented 2x4 framing, wood siding painted to match the home, black shingles, and a right-opening exterior door. Its orientation was carefully planned to maximize storage while preserving open yard space. The structure not only complements the property aesthetically but also stands as a durable, sustainable addition. Paver Patio with Roman Circle Kit We installed over 325 sq. ft. of Barkman Roman pavers, featuring a striking circular inlay in Antique Brown with Charcoal borders. The layout provides a timeless look while anchoring the space visually. To enhance longevity and drainage, the joints were finished with Romex, a premium, permeable mortar that prevents weed growth and allows for natural water flow — a perfect fit for the Pacific Northwest climate. Mini Retaining Wall To stabilize the slope near the gazebo, we built a low-profile retaining wall using angular rock and mortar. The wall improves both function and definition, integrating beautifully with the surrounding garden and patio space. Grading, Excavation & Edging Due to limited access, all preparation work was completed by hand. Our team managed grading, compaction, and bedding installation manually — a testament to the crew’s skill and precision. Snap Edge and precision edging were installed to secure the pavers and ensure structural integrity. Garden Bed Preparation & Future Planting Plan We shaped and refreshed the garden beds with premium soil and mulch, preparing the space for a native and drought-tolerant planting plan to be implemented in the spring. This will complete the design with texture, seasonal color, and ecological resilience. Throughout the project, John and Brenda were exceptional partners — proactive, kind, and genuinely invested in the process. Their willingness to collaborate made this one of our favorite builds to date. Even when unexpected challenges arose (like addressing drainage backsplash from a neighboring structure), they approached everything with patience and positivity, helping us ensure the final result exceeded expectations.
