Coastal Landscape Restoration & Retaining Structure - In progress

This project involved the restoration of a coastal residential landscape following the fall of a mature Douglas fir tree, which left a large cavity near the ocean bank and posed significant erosion and safety risks. The project was initiated to stabilize the area and restore the property to its original condition, while adhering to strict municipal and environmental regulations. Due to the property's location within a designated Development Permit Area in the District of North Saanich, the project required careful coordination with municipal planners, environmental consultants, and permitting authorities. Our team managed the application process for both a Development Permit and a Building Permit, following directives from municipal staff and on-site visits by the City’s planning and arborist teams. Key aspects of this complex project included: Site Stabilization: Removal of the fallen tree from the ocean and stabilization of the eroded bank. Structural Engineering: Coordination with subcontractors to design and frame a custom retaining structure capable of supporting future landscape restoration. Environmental Compliance: Commissioning of both a biological report and an arborist report to assess ecological impact, slope stability, and preservation of native vegetation. Regulatory Navigation: Collaboration with city planners and environmental staff to ensure all construction activities were compliant with coastal development guidelines. Work on site was voluntarily paused at the framing stage (prior to concrete pouring) upon direction from City officials, underscoring our team’s commitment to environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance. This project exemplifies our ability to manage technically challenging sites with sensitivity to ecological conditions while navigating complex approval processes. It reflects our deep respect for coastal environments and our capacity to coordinate multi-disciplinary efforts in high-stakes residential restoration projects.
