Pet Turf, Shadow Rock & Native Plantings | Cross Mountain, San Antonio TX
October 2026
Hill Country estate landscape with pet-friendly artificial turf, Texas Black shadow rock beds and native plantings in Cross Mountain, San Antonio, TX. THE CHALLENGE: Wide beds along the driveway had weedy, eroding soil, the stacked limestone boulder wall along the driveway needed to be reset, and the lawn under the mature live oaks could not hold grass in the deep shade. WHAT WE DID: Our crew lifted and set aside the existing decorative rock, cleared the weeds, regraded and laid commercial weed barrier before reinstalling the rock. Along about 50 feet of the upper wall by the driveway we reset the existing limestone boulder layers and regraded for drainage. The beds were finished with 1-3 inch Texas Black shadow rock and hardwood brown mulch over weed barrier, enriched garden soil, and a native, drought-tolerant palette: Flame Acanthus, Dallas Red Lantana, Russian Sage, Blackfoot Daisy, Red and Soft Leaf Yucca, Texas Sage, Salvia greggii, Pride of Barbados, Firepower Nandina, Dianella flax lily, Silver Ponyfoot groundcover, three Vitex trees and two Little Gem Magnolias. Under the oaks we installed about 1,670 sq ft of K9 pet turf (1-inch Durapet fiber, emerald and olive) on a 6-inch excavation with 4 inches of open-graded base and silica sand infill. THE RESULT: A finished, low-maintenance Hill Country landscape with year-round color, clean rock beds that match the stone architecture, and a green shade lawn that never needs mowing or watering. Scope: artificial turf installation, pet turf, shadow rock beds, hardwood mulch, native and drought-tolerant planting, limestone boulder wall reset, regrading and drainage, weed barrier, xeriscaping.
