We were recently contacted by a homeowner who discovered our work online and reached out for a complete renovation of their existing wood deck and patio. After scheduling a free consultation, we met onsite to assess the project and discuss their vision. The property featured a 3-tier deck and a patio area that sloped steeply toward the pool, creating both accessibility issues and underutilized space. The Plan: After reviewing the layout and listening to the client’s goals, we proposed a comprehensive redesign. We recommended replacing the original wood with low-maintenance composite boards—a durable, weather-resistant option that offers long-lasting performance and aesthetic appeal. Composite decking doesn’t splinter, warp, or require staining, making it ideal for families who want to enjoy their outdoor space without constant upkeep. We also planned to: Extend the top deck for added entertainment space. Replace the aging wood piers with steel piers for enhanced structural integrity. Expand the existing pebble concrete patio, seamlessly integrating it with the new deck design. The Build: Once we demoed and removed the original wood structure, we began rebuilding using a mix of cedar framing and composite decking. The cedar adds strength and warmth, while the composite boards provide a clean, modern finish. To achieve the modern aesthetic our client envisioned, we installed sleek aluminum guard rails on all deck levels. On the patio level, we added a custom railing with a top ledge, creating a perfect bar-height surface for drinks, food, and casual seating. Outdoor Living Upgrades: On the lowest level, we poured a new concrete slab that will serve as the base for the client's future outdoor kitchen, complete with lighting and ceiling fans. This area adds both functionality and luxury, turning their backyard into a true outdoor retreat. To finish the project and resolve the original access issue, we designed and built modern floating stairs that provide a direct, safe, and level path from the deck area down to the pool. This feature not only improves flow but also adds a bold architectural statement to the backyard.
