Trex deck landing and stairs, chopped limestone retaining walls and an artificial turf playscape in Fall Creek, San Antonio, TX. THE CHALLENGE: A shaded, sloping backyard beside a raised deck had no safe way down to the yard and no level, usable space for the kids to play. WHAT WE DID: After demo with a 4-man crew and track loaders, we built a 40 sq ft upper deck landing on new posts and substructure and 44 sq ft of stairs down to the side gate in Trex Saddle Brown, wrapped in 23 ft of Trex skirting. The railing uses stained cedar posts and rails with black galvanized hog panel infill and a Trex Cinnamon Cove cap, and a custom cedar and hog panel gate with a self-latching childproof latch closes off the top of the stairs. Three chopped limestone retaining walls in Natural Cream (110, 35 and 14 ft) on concrete footings level the yard, and a 3-step Montana Brown honed limestone staircase leads from the paver walkway to about 600 sq ft of All Seasons artificial turf for the playscape, with drainage built into the low spots. THE RESULT: A safe, kid-friendly backyard with a low-maintenance deck, a level green play area and stone walls that look like they have always been there. Scope: Trex deck and stairs, Trex skirting, cedar hog panel railing and gate, chopped limestone retaining walls, honed limestone steps, artificial turf playscape, drainage.
