Backyard landscape design and build with pet turf, a charcoal Holland paver walkway and 2x2 concrete pavers in Green Springs Valley, San Antonio, TX. THE CHALLENGE: This backyard sat under a canopy of mature live oaks, where shade and heavy use made grass impossible to keep. Water needed to move away from the house, and the family wanted clean paths, a small patio and a pet-friendly lawn. WHAT WE DID: Working from our 3D design, the crew cleared and prepped about 4,200 sq ft of backyard and regraded it to drain away from the home. We built a Belgard Holland Stone walkway in charcoal, laid in a herringbone pattern, along the garage side and out to the gate and patio, on a compacted base with sand bedding, edge restraints and polymeric sand. Square 2x2 concrete pavers set on concrete created a small patio, steps from the existing deck to the turf and patio, driveway steps and a trash-can pad, with 1/2-3/4 inch washed granite around them. About 1,065 sq ft of pet turf went down on compacted limestone screenings with filter cloth and infill, edged with 1x4 composite edging. Laredo river rock (2-4 inch) runs along both sides of the house for drainage, Medina rock covers the high side, and 18 yards of hardwood mulch fills the beds along the fence and under the oaks, planted with Nandina and Soft Leaf Yucca. THE RESULT: A shaded, pet-friendly backyard with clean walkways, a usable patio, better drainage and almost no maintenance. See the original plan in our other Green Springs Valley showcase.
