Trex composite deck ramp, cedar fence, flagstone fire pit and play area in Hidden Forest, San Antonio, TX. THE CHALLENGE: This wooded lot under mature oaks had no easy way to get from the house down to the pool level, no fenced play space for the kids and no place to gather in the evening, and roof runoff was washing through the yard. WHAT WE DID: Guided by our 3D and 2D design, we built about 188 sq ft of Trex Enhance Naturals decking in Toasted Sand, forming stairs, a pool-to-yard ramp and ramp steps, with Coastal Bluff accent boards, Rocky Harbor vertical boards, hidden fasteners, a treated-pine substructure, skirting and handrails. About 170 ft of 4 ft cedar fence with welded wire infill and a Trex top cap encloses the yard, with a 42 inch gate. Under the oaks we laid a dry-set Oklahoma flagstone fire pit patio and flagstone walkway, set 23x23 inch stepping pavers in 3/4 inch washed granite, and framed the beds and play area with about 150 ft of cream chop block. The play area got playground mulch and the beds got brown hardwood mulch with lantana, Texas sage, red yucca and dianella. We also added 100 ft of seamless gutters, a 25 ft French drain, and four LED floodlights mounted in two oaks on a transformer with a dimmer switch. THE RESULT: A safe, connected backyard: an easy ramp to the pool, a fenced play space, a fire pit for evenings and better drainage, all designed around the trees. Scope: Trex composite deck, deck ramp and stairs, handrails, cedar fence with wire infill, gate, flagstone patio, fire pit, stepping pavers, chop block border, playground mulch, mulch beds, planting, LED tree lighting, gutters, French drain, 3D design.
