Front entry paver patio, Laredo rock and drought-tolerant beds in Hollywood Park, San Antonio, TX. THE CHALLENGE: The front beds of this white brick home were built up too high against the foundation, covered in old shadow rock, and the entry had no outdoor seating space. WHAT WE DID: We removed the old rock, lowered and regraded the beds away from the foundation and hauled off the debris. At the front entry we built a 12 x 14 ft (168 sq ft) paver patio with a Danville Beige field and Suede Brown border, set 4 inches below the entry with a 2 percent slope, cleared and redirected the gutter downspout drain, and sealed it with Trident Hurricane Cat 5 for joint stabilizing and color enhancement. The beds got 25 ft of natural 4x6 chopped stone border on a concrete base, Laredo river rock along the foundation and sidewalk, three natural accent boulders, hardwood brown mulch and enriched topsoil, then soft leaf and yellow yucca, pink muhly, Mexican feather grass, dianella, pink salvia and a Vitex tree. The irrigation was converted to drip for the new plants. THE RESULT: A welcoming front courtyard for morning coffee and a clean, water-wise landscape that suits the white brick, cedar shutters and arched windows. Scope: paver patio, paver sealing, bed demo and regrading, Laredo river rock, chopped stone border, accent boulders, mulch, drought-tolerant planting, drip irrigation conversion.
