Olmos Park, San Antonio Tx.
Our client came to us with a small backyard that wasn’t being used to its full potential. They scheduled a free consultation through our website, and we met on-site to discuss their dream of turning the space into a functional outdoor retreat—with an outdoor kitchen and fireplace as the centerpiece. One of the first things we noticed during the visit was poor drainage—rainwater was pooling in areas, making the yard unusable after heavy storms. This was something we had to address from the ground up. While the customer initially considered a concrete patio extension, we recommended going with a paver patio extension instead—and here’s why: Pavers offer endless color and pattern options, making it easier to match the design to your home’s style. They’re also more durable and easier to repair than concrete, and they allow for better drainage between joints. To elevate the look and safety, we incorporated integrated lighting within the pavers, offering a seamless, flush appearance that provides both ambience and illumination for nighttime use. We began the transformation with a complete dig-out of the existing grass. Then, we poured a concrete foundation for the kitchen and chimney to ensure stability and longevity. After that, we leveled and prepped the base for the paver patio. Our customer chose a tumbled-look herringbone style paver in a custom color blend that beautifully matched the existing wall and home’s exterior. We finished the layout with a charcoal 4x8 Holland border, adding depth and definition to the patio space. For the kitchen and chimney, we built the structure with cinder blocks—a method we always use because of its durability and structural integrity. We then veneered the kitchen and fireplace in natural flagstone for a warm, timeless finish. The outdoor kitchen was customized with three dedicated zones: A built-in gas grill station A spot for a kamado-style grill And space for an outdoor fridge—perfect for keeping drinks cold We topped the kitchen with a sleek marble countertop that included a built-in electrical outlet for plugging in appliances, speakers, or lighting. To protect this investment long-term, we integrated proper drainage solutions into the build—redirecting water away from the kitchen and seating areas so the space stays dry and functional year-round. We do it all—from design to execution—tailoring every element to your space and lifestyle. Whether you're looking to build from scratch or reimagine a tight area like this one, we’re here to turn your vision into a backyard that works as hard as it looks good.
