Apollo, PA – Turning a Drafty Workshop into a Year-Round Space
Bill wanted to get more use out of his detached workshop, but cold floors, drafts, and high energy bills were making it uncomfortable—especially during the colder months. Like many detached spaces, the issue wasn’t just insulation, it was air leakage. When we evaluated the workshop, we found that conditioned air was escaping through the attic, making it difficult to maintain a steady temperature inside. Our team focused on tightening the space from the top down. We sealed attic air leaks to stop uncontrolled airflow and improved the insulation system to help the building hold temperature more effectively. A key part of the project was installing a new insulated attic access (A9-3). Attic access points are often one of the biggest sources of energy loss, especially in workshops where they are rarely sealed properly. By insulating and sealing the scuttle cover, we eliminated a major source of drafts and heat loss. With the attic properly sealed and insulated, the workshop now performs like a conditioned space. Now Bill’s workshop: ✔ Stays comfortable year-round ✔ Has significantly reduced drafts ✔ Holds heat in the winter and stays cooler in the summer ✔ Operates far more efficiently It’s now a space he can use comfortably any time of year.
