The Kinsey Apartment Building
From a contractor’s perspective, The Kinsey was much more than a renovation project—it was an opportunity to preserve a significant piece of Sedro-Woolley’s history while adapting it for modern use. Originally serving as the city’s old Town Hall, the building was transformed into a unique apartment community through a two-year restoration effort spanning September 2023 to November 2025. While demolition and new construction would have been the more economical option, ownership chose to invest more to preserve the structure’s historic character. Working closely with the City of Sedro-Woolley and Sedro Woolley Heritage, LLC, our team carefully restored original features such as wood floors, exposed beams, fireplaces, and architectural details while incorporating modern building systems. Every finish was selected to complement the building’s original era, and special attention was given to maintaining the exterior character, including the downtown mural theme featured on the garage doors. Appropriately named The Kinsey, the building pays tribute to Darius Kinsey, the renowned early-1900s photographer whose iconic images documented the Pacific Northwest logging industry. Kinsey operated a photography studio in Sedro-Woolley during the same era in which the building was originally constructed, making the name a fitting connection to the community’s rich history. Located next door to the Sedro-Woolley Museum, the project reflects the same commitment to preserving local heritage that inspired its name. The result is a unique redevelopment that showcases the craftsmanship, coordination, and dedication required to breathe new life into a historic landmark while honoring the people and stories that helped shape Sedro-Woolley.
