During this project the chimney was torn down to the roof line and rebuilt to the existing height. Missing and deteriorated chimney mortar joints occur primarily due to water infiltration and the freeze-thaw cycle. As mortar ages, it becomes porous and brittle, absorbing water that expands when frozen, cracking the joints. This allows further water penetration, leading to structural damage, leaking, and potential collapse in severe situations.
