Upon inspection of the roof following reported wind and tree-branch damage, a cracked shingle was identified at the area of impact. Further investigation determined that the damage extended through the roofing materials and into the OSB roof decking. The affected area was temporarily sealed to protect the structure from water intrusion until matching roofing materials could be sourced and a permanent repair completed. For the permanent repair, the affected shingles and hip/ridge cap shingles were carefully removed to expose the damaged area. Due to the damage being located immediately adjacent to the roof valley, removal and replacement of the OSB would have required disturbing the existing valley assembly and significantly enlarging the repair area. To avoid unnecessarily compromising this vulnerable roof transition, the localized decking damage was instead reinforced with metal flashing secured over the affected area to provide a solid, stable backing. The existing synthetic underlayment was carefully cut as necessary to install the reinforcement. Ice and water shield was then installed beneath the upper edge of the existing synthetic underlayment and over the lower edge to maintain positive water-shedding drainage. An additional, larger layer of ice and water shield was installed over the entire repair area to provide secondary waterproofing and seal penetrations created during removal of the damaged roofing materials. Finally, the removed shingles and hip/ridge caps were replaced with new matching materials and properly secured, restoring the roof covering and providing a weather-tight finished repair.
