We recently completed a barrel tile roof cleaning in the Artisan Lakes community in Palmetto, FL. This gray tile roof had noticeable black algae buildup—especially on the north-facing side, which tends to stay shaded longer and hold moisture. Even though lighter color changes can be subtle on gray tile, the cleaning made a significant difference in removing the dark algae staining and restoring a more uniform appearance. For this project, we safely cleaned the roof using a ladder-based approach—no walking on the tile roof—to prevent cracked or damaged tiles. We repositioned the ladder as needed to properly reach different elevations and roof pitches. Because the gutter system drains into a French drain with pop-ups in the yard, we also used a sodium hypochlorite neutralizer in the downspouts to help manage runoff and protect surrounding landscaping.
