This project came to us from an experienced koi keeper whose existing pond was in the wrong spot and leaking badly. The pond was full of big, established koi, so redesigning it meant more than just fixing the leak. We brought the whole thing in closer to the house and rebuilt it from the ground up to actually work for how the family uses it. Their big dog loves swimming in the pond and the grandkids are over all the time, so a beach entry was non negotiable. It gives everyone easy access into the water without ever feeling like they're intruding on the fish. The destination stone is a large piece of Goshen stone placed right over the deepest part of the pond. It's become the spot where the family stands to feed their koi, and on a hot day it doubles as a place to sit and dip your feet in. Since this pond holds a lot of large koi, we built in a 3 foot deep zone with a large fish cave for them to retreat to. They've settled in well, so well that they actually spawned the following year. Maintenance was a big priority for this client, so we installed a custom intake bay. Instead of bending over to empty a skimmer basket every day, all the debris in the pond can just be scooped out with a net. Because of the extra depth, we added two jets positioned near the top of the beach area. They keep debris from settling into the beach zone and push everything, including fish waste, toward the intake bay by keeping solids suspended in the water column until they reach it. The spillway bowl rounds out the design. It's filled with river rock and aquatic plants, so beyond adding to the look of the pond, it also works as a secondary filter.
