Roofing and solar work best when they're planned together. Installing solar panels over an aging roof can create unnecessary costs later if the roofing system needs to be replaced after the panels are already in place. For this home in the Clairemont neighborhood of San Diego, we partnered with one of our trusted solar contractors to install a new roofing system before the solar equipment was placed back into service. Because the home featured two different roof designs, each section received the roofing system best suited for its application. The front of the home was reroofed with Owens Corning Duration Cool architectural shingles in Shasta White, providing a clean appearance while meeting California Cool Roof requirements. The rear low-slope roof received a mechanically attached TPO roofing system installed over fan-fold insulation. The insulation helps create a smoother surface while separating the new roofing membrane from the existing substrate, and the mechanically attached TPO membrane provides a durable, reflective waterproofing system well suited for low-slope applications. Every roof transition, flashing, and detail where the shingle roof met the TPO roof required careful attention to ensure both roofing systems worked together as one complete waterproof assembly. Projects like this demonstrate that the best roofing system isn't always a single product. It's choosing the right material for each section of the home and coordinating with other trades to ensure everything works together for years to come.
