Replaced two deteriorated wood-shingle gable ends on a prior customer’s home in Lake Highlands (75238) with a long-term synthetic solution using DaVinci shake in the Autumn blend. The existing wood shingles had reached the end of their service life, with visible curling, splitting, and loss of integrity. Work began with a full tear-off of the existing wood shingles. As expected with this type of assembly, the gables were originally installed over skip sheathing, which is not compatible with modern synthetic products. We installed new solid OSB decking across both gable ends to create a proper substrate, followed by synthetic underlayment to meet current installation standards. The new DaVinci shake was installed in a staggered pattern to replicate the natural variation of real cedar while providing significantly improved durability and reduced maintenance. The Autumn color was selected to blend well with the existing brick and surrounding materials, maintaining the character of the home while upgrading performance. Additional work included minor soffit and trim adjustments and installation of new screens at the gable louvers to improve ventilation protection. This project is a good example of transitioning from traditional wood to a modern composite system while preserving the original look. The end result delivers a cleaner appearance, better weather resistance, and a longer service life with less ongoing maintenance.
