Metalworks Skatepark Construction
Tucked into the heart of Ferndale’s growing recreation corridor, Metalworks Skate Park stands as a dynamic example of how thoughtful construction and community vision come together. Janicki General Contracting (JGC) built the 10,000-square-foot facility that offers a vibrant mix of street and transition elements—plaza features, a bowl, and varied terrain—welcoming skateboarders, BMX riders, and scooter users of all experience levels. This site presented a unique challenge of an extremely flat landscape with minimal natural slope for drainage. JGC collaborated closely with an innovative skate park designer and project engineers to overcome these grading complexities, to ensure proper drainage while maintaining the integrity of the design. Beyond its technical achievements, Metalworks Skate Park reflects Ferndale’s identity. Incorporating reclaimed metal artifacts from the former Intalco aluminum smelter, the park pays tribute to the city’s industrial roots—an influence echoed in both its name and aesthetic details. With added features like shaded areas, stormwater infrastructure, and landscaping enhancements, it provides a safe, accessible environment that encourages activity, creativity, and connection.
