72 to 108: Expanding the View
What began as a simple sliding glass door replacement evolved into a much more impactful renovation. The homeowner initially planned to replace an existing 72-inch-wide sliding glass door with a similar-sized unit. After evaluating the structure and discussing the possibilities, we recommended expanding the opening to create a more open and inviting living space. To achieve the larger opening, we removed the existing header and installed a new engineered LVL beam, allowing the opening to increase from 72 inches to 108 inches wide while maintaining structural integrity and meeting all applicable building code requirements. The result was a 50% increase in opening width, dramatically improving natural light, views, and the connection between the indoor and outdoor living areas. What was once a standard patio door became a much larger focal point of the home, creating a brighter, more modern, and more functional living space for the homeowner.
