Six Feet to Sixteen: The Ultimate Opening Transformation
This project began with a standard 72-inch (6-foot) sliding glass door and a separate office window that limited natural light, views, and the overall openness of the home. After evaluating the space and discussing the homeowner's goals, we developed a plan to completely reimagine the rear elevation of the house. Our team removed the existing sliding glass door, eliminated the adjacent office window, and combined the openings into one expansive structural opening designed to accommodate a custom 16-foot-wide impact-rated sliding glass door system. To maximize glass and minimize visual obstructions, the new door was configured with only three oversized panels rather than the more common four-panel design, creating a cleaner, more modern appearance and larger unobstructed views. The structural modifications required careful engineering, demolition, framing alterations, and installation of a new engineered LVL header to support the enlarged opening while maintaining the home's structural integrity. The finished result transformed the space from a collection of smaller openings into a dramatic wall of glass. Natural light increased significantly, sightlines were expanded, and the connection between the interior and outdoor living areas was completely redefined. What started as a simple door replacement became a major architectural upgrade that changed the entire feel of the home.
