Beyond Traditional Paint: A Limewash Transformation in Brewerytown

September 2026

This Philadelphia interior project was all about taking a neutral palette and giving it dimension, movement, and personality. Led by crew leader Edy, our team transformed the living room and kitchen, first-floor stairwell, and hallway using a combination of traditional Sherwin-Williams finishes and beautiful Portola Paints Antler Limewash. The scope included more than 1,600 square feet of walls and nearly 900 square feet of ceilings. Preparation was especially important for this project. Floors and furnishings were carefully protected, imperfections were patched and repaired, glossy surfaces were sanded and cleaned, and the limewash walls received a latex primer base coat before the decorative finish was applied. The work order specified two finish coats throughout the painted surfaces. The open living room and kitchen became the centerpiece of the transformation. The walls received two coats of Portola Paints Antler Limewash, creating the subtle tonal variation and organic movement that make limewash such a distinctive finish. Rather than appearing perfectly uniform like traditional wall paint, the finish gives the large open space added depth and visual interest. The ceiling was finished in Natural Choice SW7011 Flat, while the baseboards and interior-side door frame were painted Natural Choice SW7011 Semi-Gloss using Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Enamel. The first-floor stairwell continues the Antler limewash, allowing the textured finish to flow naturally from the main living area into the home's vertical space. Natural Choice SW7011 was carried onto the ceiling in Flat and the baseboards in Semi-Gloss, creating consistency between the two areas. In the hallway, we transitioned to a more traditional painted finish with Sherwin-Williams Cashmere Natural Choice SW7011 Eggshell on the walls and Emerald Urethane Enamel Natural Choice SW7011 Semi-Gloss on the baseboards and door frames. The five hallway doors became their own design feature in Sommelier SW7595 Satin, introducing a deep, wine-inspired accent against the warm neutral surroundings. The finished project combines soft neutrals, dimensional limewash, and rich accent color to create an interior that feels warm, distinctive, and intentionally designed. The project photos on page 6 also show how the same palette carries visually from the open living and kitchen area through the stairwell and into the hallway. Another Groovy Hues transformation where texture, color, and detailed preparation came together to create something truly unique. ✨🏡
